How to Make Your Subway Commute Calmer
Millions of New Yorkers ride the subway every weekday, and Grand Central, a few blocks from our office, is one of the busiest hubs in the city. A little planning makes the trip easier.
Protect your hearing
Subway platforms and trains can be loud enough to affect hearing over time. Noise-cancelling headphones let you listen at lower volume. Keep volume moderate and stay aware of announcements and your surroundings.
Plan around the crowds
If your schedule allows, travel a little before or after the morning and evening peaks. Use the MTA’s real-time arrival information to time your walk to the station.
Pack light and smart
- A refillable water bottle.
- A phone charger or power bank.
- A small umbrella for the walk at either end.
- Hand sanitizer.
Stay safe on the platform
Stand well back from the platform edge, keep bags in front of you on crowded trains and move to a car with other riders late at night.
