Keeping a Dog Happy in a High-Rise Apartment
Plenty of dogs thrive in Manhattan apartments. The key is a daily routine with enough exercise, mental activity and rest.
Build a routine
Plan regular walks at the same times each day, including a longer one in a park. Dogs settle better when they know what to expect.
Practice elevator and lobby manners
Keep your dog on a short leash in hallways and elevators, ask before sharing an elevator and reward calm behavior around neighbors.
Exercise the mind too
- Use puzzle feeders at mealtime.
- Play short training games indoors.
- Rotate a few favorite toys.
- Give your dog a comfortable bed in a quiet corner.
Follow city rules
New York City requires dogs to be licensed and leashed in public, except in designated off-leash areas and hours, and owners must pick up after their dogs.
